Winston-Salem Symphony February 2005 concerts presented in memory of artist Elsie Dinsmore Popkin
Winston-Salem, NC – Thanks to a very generous gift by an anonymous donor, the Winston-Salem Symphony’s February 2005 concerts will be dedicated to the memory of Elsie Dinsmore Popkin. The concerts will take place at the Stevens Center on Saturday, February 5 at 7 pm, Sunday, February 6 at 3 pm, and Tuesday, February 8 at 8 pm and will feature music by Ginastera, Brahms, and Beethoven.
Elsie Dinsmore Popkin was a long time supporter of the Winston-Salem Symphony, in which her husband, Mark, is principal bassoon. She was present at many rehearsals and concerts in order to sketch the musicians and guest artists of the Symphony. In addition, Mrs. Popkin’s artwork was used in numerous Symphony publicity pieces, including season brochures, playbill covers, and invitations to Symphony events. She also made donations of her art to fundraisers that benefited the Symphony. The Symphony also proudly displays Mrs. Popkin’s artwork in its downtown offices.
In a recent letter to Symphony musicians announcing the memorial concerts, Executive Director, Merritt Vale wrote, “This is a very painful loss, but I cannot imagine a more fitting tribute to Elsie than the gift of your beautiful music.”
